Israel allows the setting up of “Humanitarian Corridor”

In the face of increasing international pressure Israel has finally agreed to let open a “humanitarian corridor” in order for vital supplies to reach through to the suffering people of Gaza. Meanwhile the carnage continues to increase as Israel steps up its military offensive by going in on land along with the air strikes.
The U.N Security Council had proposed the idea of the setting up the humanitarian corridor which the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert accepted.
The plan requires Israel to suspend their military campaign in certain specified areas which would allow the people of Gaza strip to get the supplies they desperately need. It was released in a statement on early Wednesday that the aim for taking such a step was to “prevent a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.”
The U.N has been having a tough time convincing Israel to let open a safe passage for the vital supplies. Israel argues that it has allowed plenty of supplies to reach through during the eleven day campaign. Shortage of food, medicine and fuel has however already created a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
On Tuesday a number of Israeli mortar shells managed to kill more than thirty Palestinians as they exploded close to a U.N school in Gaza. The school was being used to provide shelter to the hundreds of people that have been displaced by Israeli attacks but it turned into a graveyard for many.
Israel argues that Hamas militants have been using civilians as cover and that the mortar shells were fired in response to mortar fire that was being launched from the U.N school building. A couple of witnesses saw Hamas militants firing mortar shells from the streets close to the school.
As Israeli attacks such as the one illustrated above continue the numbers keep adding to the civilian death toll. Concerned over the way things are going down at the Gaza strip the international community has been pressing for a cease fire in the region but to no avail.
The attack that took place near the U.N school has been the deadliest episode of civilian carnage since the Israeli offensive began. More than six hundred Palestinians have died in 11 days and almost half of them were civilians. The opening of the humanitarian corridor has been a small achievement that the international community has been able to make against Israel which is determined to continue with its carnage.
