London: A new research found that sweet drinks can reduce stress at work and make people less aggressive or argumentative.  According to a research psychologist says that sweet drinks such as sugary tea can help people to reduce stress and boost energy. In a test some of volunteers were given lemonade sweetened with sugar and some volunteers with artificial sweetener, study shows that those who had drunk sugar performed better than other volunteers under pressure. Researchers criticized in order to irritate them; they asked several stressful tasks on each subject before giving the presentation. People who drunk the sugary lemonade were less likely to snap than those people who had artificial sweetener.

The Australian psychologists said, “When provocation is likely, for example, when encountering a difficult supervisor at a work meeting, drinking a sweetened beverage prior to this encounter might increase one’s ability to effectively inhibit aggressive impulses.” “Consuming a sweetened beverage on the commute home following a stressful day could reduce aggression toward family members or fellow drivers,” he added.

The researchers from the University of New South Wales and Queensland University said that “Glucose is required by the brain to enable “executive functioning”, which included the ability to restrain one’s impulses”. “Despite the widespread notion that glucose consumption can lead to a ‘sugar high’ resulting in impulsive behavior our data suggest that glucose can increase executive control when provoked,” said researchers.

In terms of content, Karunakar said, “Non-profit sites scored the highest, then academic sites (including medical journal sites), and then certain non-sales-oriented commercial sites.

Commercial sites such as those sponsored by companies selling a drug or treatment device were very common but frequently incomplete. About 20 percent of the sites that turned up in the top ten results were sponsored sites.”

Karunakar said “These site owners are motivated to promote their product, so the information found there may be biased. We also found that these sites rarely mentioned the risks or complications associated with treatment as they are trying to represent their product in the best possible light.”

A team at University College London Institute of Child Health suggested to pregnant women in the UK should routinely take vitamin D supplements. Researchers found strong case for a daily dose of vitamin D in pregnancy, writing in the British Journal of Nutrition.

The Department of Health advises to pregnant women that they should receive a certain level of Vitamin D 10 micrograms per day. Because sun and diet are providing too little so they should use supplements.

But the National Institute of health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said in its guidance that it did not support supplements.

It is important to maintain level of vitamin D during pregnancy. Women may choose supplements to maintain level. Women should be informed about the importance of having adequate vitamin D levels.

Dr Elina Hypponen, co-author of the paper, said, “The incidence of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women in Britain is unacceptably high, especially during winter and spring. This is compounded by a lack of exposure to sunlight and the limitations of an average diet to meet the optimal need. In the most severe cases, maternal vitamin D deficiency can be life threatening to a newborn.

We believe that the routine provision of a daily supplement throughout pregnancy would significantly decrease the number of mothers who are clearly vitamin D deficient, reducing related serious risks to their babies” he says.

“Past evidence showed a proactive approach to supplements coincided with a much lower incidence of deficiency linked diseases such as infantile hypocalcaemia and rickets (which weakens bones)” Dr Hypponen said.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends only women at risk of vitamin D deficiency should take a supplement.

Patrick O’Brien, a spokesman for the college, said, “There is gradually accumulating evidence that universal vitamin D supplementation in the UK might be beneficial for the whole population. But more research is needed on the balance of risks and benefits in women at low risk of vitamin D deficiency, and on the correct dosage to use.”

Deakin University’s Associate Professor Wei Duan, who leads the project in collaboration with scientists in India, says “Cancer cells are particularly difficult to kill as they contain so-called cancer stem cells, the root or seed cancer cells that are resistant to drugs.”

Duan said in a statement “While current treatments kill the bulk of the cancer cell, the cancer root escapes the therapy and can regenerate into a new cancer mass.

The aim of our research is to develop a smart bomb that can penetrate the cell and release the drugs within the cells, rather than from the outside, and kills the whole tumor, root and all.” he added.

A technique known as RNA interference or gene silencing, the molecular drug delivery system would use this technique which enables control over the genes inside cells. The researchers are developing a chemical antibody which will bind specially to cancer cells.

Duan said that “The same technique might be used to tackle neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and diabetes.”

The project is collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre and ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals.
